Why have Cheviots?

The North Country Cheviot is a hardy & versatile sheep that produce top quality lambs. The breed is versatile in the respect that it not only breeds a good pure ewe lamb, but can be crossed with many tups (rams) such as the Leicester, Texel, Suffolk etc to produce a tremendous fat lamb carcass making it very economical.

By using the leicester tup on the cheviot ewe you get the very popular cheviot mule a very prolific female sheep producing an excellent fat lamb.

The Cheviot Tup put onto hill breeds such as Herdwick and Swaledale ewes produce a meatier carcass than it would pure bred, whilst still remaining hardy yet economical.

The North Country Cheviot plays a leading role in the UK’s sheep industry. The breed produces what the market demands – quality and value.

The Cheviot makes a good starter flock or for those with a small holding wanting to keep the grass down. The ewes make brilliant mothers with good scanning rates, little intervention required at birth, prolific milkers, their wool is fine and profitable unlike many other breeds where you make a loss on shearing.
